Pasadena, California – Providence Christian College is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Scolinos as Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director at Providence Christian College. The appointment of Scolinos represents a new initiative to establish a collegiate baseball program at Providence.

Mike holds a Master’s degree in Education and Physicial Education from Azusa Pacific University and a B.S. in Physical Education from Cal Poly Pomona University where he also began his coaching career in collegiate baseball under the tutelage of his famed uncle John Scolinos, the NCAA Coach of the Century as voted by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Mike’s own career has now spanned 27 impressive years filled with countless highlights and awards.

Scolinos played on a College World Series team and coached a 2nd place World Series team at Cal Poly Pomona. He has also coached at Rio Hondo College, Pasadena City College, Charleston Southern University, and Coppin State University.

At Pasadena City College, Mike took over a program that had one of California’s worst winning percentages over the previous twenty years. In his first year, they reached the top ten. In addition, he holds the best record in nearly forty years at Pasadena City College.

At Charleston Southern, an NCAA Division I program, Scolinos volunteered for one year as the co-head coach with his friend, Jason Murray. They handed eventual College World Series runner-up #2 ranked Florida their first home-opening loss in nearly 25 years, beat SEC powers Kentucky and College of Charleston, and shut down #8 Florida State and #4 South Carolina’s offenses.

At Coppin State University, Mike turned around perhaps the worst baseball team in Division I history, in the middle of the year with only nine players. In the process, he set the record for best win-loss percentage for a coach in his first two season.

Newly appointed president, Dr. Jim Belcher, himself an avid baseball fan, said this about Mike’s appointment and the launch of a baseball program at Providence:

“Providence is committed to educating the whole person and athletics plays an important role in the training and development of emerging adults. For centuries the scholar athlete has been a valuable tool for discipline, character and leadership. I am thus thrilled that Providence is launching a baseball program this fall and believe it is a huge step forward for our young college.”
