The Annual Sea Beggar Scramble teed off on
April 22nd in a new location: La Canada Flintridge Country Club. With the sun shining and a nice cool breeze, over 120 golfers took to the course, raising close to $40,000 in support of the Providence athletic programs. This year’s banquet featured
a number of exciting raffles, live auction items, and recognition of top student athletes. A new athletic department award, titled the Champions of Character award, was given to Becca hernandez ’20. This award goes to an athlete who has demonstrated the NAIA five core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership during their time at Providence. Hernandez has exemplified these qualities through her leadership on and off the field as a team captain as well as a Resident Assistant.
The Athletics Department also recognized the top performing academic student in each Varsity sport:
Men’s Baseball - Aaron Gooch ’21
Men’s Cross Country - Dean Whitcher ’19 Women’s Cross Country - Ruth Fleeman ’19 Men’s Soccer - Josiah Vanderveen ’19 Women’s Soccer - Danielle Stafford ’19 Women’s Volleyball - Alexis Le Clech ’20
Athletic Director, Brian DeHaan, spoke to the success of the event: “The Sea Beggar Scramble has been a highlight at Providence for the past 11 years, and the 2019 tournament was no exception. Everyone who participated in the day directly impacted the student-athlete experience, and we are extremely grateful for the generosity of our friends and families. We are building an athletic program at Providence that honors the Lord and this fundraiser advances our mission and vision for the department. I sincerely thank everyone who helped make the day a success, and I’m looking forward to our continued growth in 2020.”
