Mission Statement:
The English Department at Providence Christian College recognizes The Word as the creative origin of all life (John 1:1-5) and the word—written and oral—as fundamental to the development and maintenance of human community; it equips students with college-level thinking and writing skills (writing), discipline-specific content knowledge, and familiarity with established critical approaches to literature (reading).
Concentration Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the English concentration will be able to:
1. Demonstrate content knowledge: Literacy in British, American, and world poems, plays, short stories, novels, and literary non-fiction; authors’ lives; texts’ historical context; and critical theory.
2. Develop communication and critical thinking skills: Compose college-level analytical essays using rational structure (logos), accepted style and appropriate evidence (ethos), and sympathy for opposing points of view (pathos). Deliver effective oral presentations and formulate critical responses to peer work.
3. Apply a Biblical perspective to literature: Interpret literary texts within the paradigm of creation, fall, and redemption.
