The Providence Chamber Singers sang their annual Christmas concert at Santa Anita Church on Saturday night. The name of the evening’s performance was Christmas Past, Christmas Future, celebrating both traditional Christmas music and contemporary arrangements, including the premiere of Dr. Lawrence Mumford’s musical setting for the Magnificat.

Mumford has directed the chamber singers this year, though he’s taught music classes at Providence for several years. He has brought a wide and rich appreciation for music to the Providence music classes and that was evident on Saturday. The repertoire included everything from Michael Praetorious to the jazz chords that set the tone for his original composition. The program included an instrumental version of What Child is This, featuring Laurelinda Larkins ’13 on flute.

The concert featured pieces by Mozart and Antonio Lotti and concluded with excerpts from A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten who was born 100 years ago, next year.

As the music department looks ahead to next semester, Providence is excited to welcome Christina Bristow to the adjunct faculty. She’ll be teaching private voice lessons.
