The Providence Christian College Chamber Singers will perform their annual Christmas concert on Saturday, December 5th at 7:30 p.m. at Prism Church in Pasadena, directed by Christina Bristow, professional soprano and Adjunct Professor of Music at Providence. The concert entitled “Glory to God in the Highest” will include the Chamber Singers, Instrumental Ensemble, and vocal solos by students Elise Groenewold and Dean Whitcher.Christmas

Celebrating both traditional Christmas music and contemporary arrangements, the concert will feature songs including Silent Night, I Wonder as I Wander, a rhythmic Spanish contemporary song Ale Pun and a vocal jazz arrangement of White Christmas, according to Bristow. The program will include an instrumental arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High.

The Christmas Concert, which is free and open to the public, will be the first featuring the college’s new instrumental ensemble, which began rehearsals in September with all the instruments necessary to play a variety of music including jazz, hymns, and contemporary pieces. The instrumental ensemble includes trumpets, trombone, alto saxophone, piano, and guitar.

Both the instrumental ensemble and the Chamber Singers of Providence are under the direction of Adjunct Professor of Music, Christina Bristow. Professor Bristow’s full-time occupation is performing as a soprano with the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Some of the highlights from her time with the LAMC include performances as the soprano soloist for Handel’s Messiah and completing a successful summer Hollywood Bowl season with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Highlights included Mendelsohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream conducted by maestro Gustavo Dudamel and Verdi’s La Traviata. Bristow also has had the opportunity to sing in her first feature film soundtrack, Pixels. Professor Bristow also gives private voice lessons to several Providence students who greatly benefit from her training and expertise.

This holiday season, Bristow will be performing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in the Festival of Carols on December 5 and 12; Handel’s Messiah on December 6 and 20; and Rejoice! Brass Tidings on December 13.

The Chamber Singers have a long history at Providence and have been in existence from the very beginning of the college. Providence enjoys several students each year who come from high schools with excellent choral and music programs, and the most elite of these students form the Chamber Singers. A small yet powerful ensemble of performers, the Chamber Singers perform in a number of churches, fine art nights, and in various concerts each season. Each year begins with a learning intensive retreat followed by twice a week practices to perfect and memorize a wide variety of performance pieces.
